*spoilers duh* I think he never really loved her anyway.I think he mentioned that he married her because of her lineage and also towards the end he reveals that he knew of her affair with her step-son. Since he's quite a cruel and vindictive character it wouldn't be odd for him to want to torture her in such a way.
