There is a danger when makig a film "loosely" based on a short story that the final product is not composed of much story material at all. You could argue that the directore gives more room to his cinematography, and you'd be part right, because some of it is breathtaking. The way he films the rain, particularly in a long panning shot of a stream at the end, is almost super-human in its grace and control. I loved The Return and I have watched it many times. It is truly beautiful film. I have not yet seen The Banishment but I will be adding it to my Net Flicks tonight, no question!

This such a special movie, The acting, cinematography, and the dialogue is really an intelligent piece of film making that has left American cinema. It is too bad the oldest Brother met his death at the same lake where this movie was made, he could have been a brilliant actor based on his performance in this film. Do you know if the younger boy has done any movies since this it would be aweful if he did not continue to act, his role in this film I feel was one of the toughest. Thank you
